Tête à chapeau : oser porter un chapeau
Nobody can imagine how proud I was when Marianne accepted me in her workshop only a couple of days ago. I stayed there for 2 and ½ days having planned to make a mother-of-the-bride hat, crafted from ivory parasisal (sort of fine straw) and heavy silk of similar colour, decorated with 2 beautiful hand made organza flowers.
When I arrived at Marianne’s place a hat made out of felt attracted my attention and I thought, well, maybe ... hm, let me tell you that story a bit later!
The mother-of-the-bride hat turned out to be a bit tricky but after one or two ‘mistakes’, which forced me to start over with some steps, I managed to create a really beautiful hat. Marianne was very calm, keeping a sharp eye on everybody, highlighting even the slightest imperfections on our hats. Well, this is the way to learn and this was the guidance we expected from her. How proud we were, in the end, having finished our hats!
The atmosphere was very friendly, the girls working and openly exchanging their ideas and lunch and coffee very welcome. Classic music in the background made the atmosphere even more cozy.
So, here are some pictures of the work shop, hope you will enjoy them and a big thank you to Marianne and to my co-students for these wonderful moments.
Oh, I nearly forgot. Marianne speaks German, English and Dutch but here are some words in Dutch which you will hear during the workshop and I thought, I should let you know (I do not guarantee the correct writing but well, I will do better next time, promise!).
Some Dutch important millinery words
- Knippen – to cut
- Affknippen – to cut off
- Schrad – scissors
- Poatje – wooden stand
- Spelder – pins
- Stormen – to damp
I would like also to thank Marianne’s kind husband who offered us coffee or tea during our workshop. These were really great moments giving us a good excuse to relax a little bit. Of course it is a lot of fun to make a hat, but I can tell you that it needs a lot of focus on what you are doing and in the end of the day I was tired, happy to go to bed but already excited to see what kind of surprises the next day of my workshop would have to offer!
And here one of the surprise results. Remember the beginning, when I saw this blue felt hat? I thought, well, maybe ... I could create a similar style of hat as well. I chose a beautiful dark blue felt and a black high quality leather edge and I am really pleased with the result. So pleased, that I am not going to sell this one, but I will buy a new hat block and create similar ones in other colours. Watch out on my site...!
